A seasonal overview from Philip Wright - Wright Resolutions February/March 2024
The current wet weather with increasing extremes has highlighted the importance of having a resilient soil structure capable of passing excess water through, alongside the need for well aggregated, resilient soil crumbs and stable pathways throughout. Key to such resilience is having positive, aerobic biological activity, and growing crops with good root systems. This helps to maintain two critical factors – a resilient soil and positive yields to support the business bottom line. Removing barriers to water, air and root passage is a starting point. Prevention of such problems should always be a priority, but sometimes, where “less is more”, “zero” is not enough. Removing barriers needs to be done carefully, since over-loosening (by traditional often high disturbance loosening methods) can result in a loss of soil strength and resilience, leading to a declining situation for soils. Having adequate “stretch” to impart vertical fissures through problem layers is therefore an essential part of tillage nowadays.
